NME readers have had an overwhelmingly positive response to the new single from The xx, 'Angels'.

'Angels' is the first track from the London trio's forthcoming second album 'Coexist', which is due for release on September 10.

Christoph Klasen wrote of the slow-burning comeback song: "Fantastic, production sounds much more nuanced" while Daniel Shakir said "Lovely stuff. Perhaps an odd choice for the first single from the new album, but quite beautiful nonetheless." Christie Ghent said "its perfect" and Lorna Patrick agreed, writing "it's amaaazing!"

However, a minority of fans weren't overly keen, with Chris Fairbarn saying it was "Disappointing to be honest. I was guessing this was going to be the sound based on what they had been playing live, the track simply, goes nowhere." Jake Green added "It's good, but was hoping on hearing some of the new club/house influence."

Posting the song on their Facebook page, The xx wrote: "It's been a long time since we've played you anything new. This song is called 'Angels', it is the first single from our new album, 'Coexist'. We've been playing this song live recently, so it feels good to share with you the version we've been working on for so long. We hope you like it. xx The xx". Scroll down to listen to the song.

Speaking exclusively to NME previously about the new material, singer and guitarist Romy Madley Croft said the new songs show the evolution of the band over the past few years. "I've been thinking that I hope people enjoy it as a separate thing. The first album exists – we're not trying to make it again. She added that although she's "happy we've progressed" the new material is "not prog rock".

The xx are set to play Bestival this September, as well as a string of other European festivals.
