The xx have fended off competition from Bob Dylan and The Script to take the Number One spot in the Official UK Album Chart today (September 16).

Previously, the London trio's debut LP 'xx' climbed as high as Number Three in the charts but the Official Charts Company reports that their follow-up effort 'Coexist', which was released on September 10, has given them the first UK Number One LP.

The new album from The Script, titled 'Number 3', charted at Number Two while Bob Dylan's latest effort 'Tempest' – his 35th studio LP – is at Number Three. Coldplay's 'Mylo Xlyoto' is at Number Four, while Emeli Sande rounds out the top five.

The Vaccines have fallen to Number Six with 'The Vaccines Come Of Age' after claiming last week's top spot, with Two Door Cinema Club at Number Seven with 'Beacon'. Joe McElderry is new at Number Eight, the Pet Shop Boy's latest record 'Elysium' at Number Nine and Plan B at Number Ten.

In the singles chart, meanwhile, The Script are at Number One with 'Hall Of Fame' featuring Will.i.am, while former X Factor contestant Amelia Lily is at Number Two with 'You Bring Me Joy'. Last week’s Number One, Ne-Yo, slips to Number Three with Little Mix at Number Four and Pink at Number Five.

Perhaps the week’s biggest surprise entry, however, is Gerry And The Pacemakers' version of 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. The track, which was originally a Number One hit in 1963 and has been adopted as the anthem for fans of Liverpool FC, is at Number 12 after selling over 28,000 copies in less than 48 hours following the release of a report into the Hillsborough disaster last week. A campaign was started on Friday evening (September 14) urging people to buy the song after it was revealed that police had tampered with witness statements regarding the tragic incident which saw 96 football fans lose their lives in a stadium crush in April 1989.
