The xx, Grimes and Cat Power are among the acts who have been forced to postpone live shows in New York as the city braces itself for the arrival of Hurricane Sandy.

The hurricane, which is expected to hit the East Coast of the USA in the next few days, has already seen 375,000 people evacuated from New York and numerous events affected as people escape the coming storm.

The xx have postponed three shows in New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore in anticipation of the storm. The band's record label Young Turks has confirmed that all three shows will be rescheduled with original tickets still valid. Meanwhile, after Grimes' show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg was pulled, she tweeted: "I am fully appreciating the seriousness of this situation, but its kind of exciting to be stuck in a hurricane."

Other shows affected by Hurricane Sandy and New York's preparations included Cat Power's gig at Electric Factory, a Rita Ora show in Philadelphia and the Freedom to Love Now! charity fundraiser show which was set to see The National and Rufus Wainwright perform. Cat Power's show has already been rescheduled for January 30, 2013.

Many concerts due to be held tonight (October 29) and later in the week are also affected with John Legend's date at the newly opened Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, originally scheduled for October 29, postponed until further notice. However, not all events have been pushed back with bands such as Swans, Cypress Hill and Deftones proceeding with previously scheduled live dates in the city as planned.
