The Zutons singer Dave McCabe broke a man's nose after headbutting him for laughing at a comment insulting his girlfriend, a court has heard.

The prosecution in the case opened today (September 20) with McCabe being accused of attacking Peter Appleby in an alcohol-fuelled row outside Liverpool's Korova nightclub in February.

Jurors at the city's Crown Court were told that one of Appleby's five friends mocked McCabe's girlfriend over her fur-collared jacket, claiming she looked like she had a beard, reports BBC News.

The court heard that she then reacted "angrily" and The Zutons singer approached the group while Appleby was laughing.

Ben Morris, who opened the case for the prosecution, said of Appleby: "He never made the remark but he was laughing because he thought it was funny. McCabe came over and headbutted Appleby, causing him a broken nose."

Appleby said the comment was not intended to be overheard and accused the woman of "over-reacting". He also described how McCabe approached the group in an "aggressive" manner before shouting abuse.

"He seemed to be directing it at me and then he lunged towards me and headbutted me," said Appleby.

He told the jury he had consumed six pints of Guinness and he was drunk, but denied doing anything to provoke the attack.

The court also heard McCabe will tell jurors he was surrounded by Mr Appleby and his friends and believed he was about to be struck, so took the action in self-defence.

McCabe co-wrote Mark Ronson And The Business Intl's new single 'The Bike Song', featuring The View's frontman Kyle Falconer. It is due for release next Monday (September 27).
