Radiohead back climate change initiative

Thom Yorke gets in on The Big Ask campaign

Radiohead’s Thom Yorke has put his support behind The Big Ask Europe, a movement pushing for greater legislation to combat the emissions that cause climate change.

Yorke presented the European Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas with a symbol of The Big Ask today (February 27) at the launch of their campaign.

The organisation, along with a number of Friends Of The Earth groups, is asking the governments of 17 European states, including the UK, to commit to legally binding limits of emissions of materials believed to cause climate change.

With reference to the importance of the project, Yorke says: “We will never wake from the nightmare of climate change unless our national governments and the European Union act. They are the only ones who can put the structures in place that will help us tackle climate change.

“That is why we are launching The Big Ask in 17 countries across Europe. By committing to annual cuts in our emissions at a national and European level we can play our part in tackling climate change, and set an example for the rest of world to follow.”

The Big Ask has previously campaigned to get the UK to implement targets for cutting carbon dioxide emissions – this law will now come into force this summer.

However, the organisation is looking for other emissions to be cut as well.

The Shockwaves NME Awards 2008 take place this Thursday (February 28) at a special ceremony in London. Follow all the action here, head to NME.COM/awardsvote for full details.

blah blah blah. all we need, another bono or sting. stick to making music. climate change is natural, the planet goes through cyclical changes, it warms up, it cools down. look at the ice age as an example. it came, it went. natural. stop being a sponge and soaking up everything certain governments want you to believe. you are a musician not a politician. get a grip.

Everyone has a right to free speech, and just because Thom happens to be a musician, it doesn't mean that he doesn't have the right like everyone else

Well done Thom. Just because the climate is now on the agenda does not mean anything sufficient is being done.

well done for clearly not being another Bono or Sting, by refusing to play along to the governments phoney PR campaigns/ meet and greets.

There will always be fools parroting back what special interest groups feed them, well done for paying attention to more enlightened individuals than Clarkson and Bush.

You are a human being and a citizen first, a musician second. Well done for exercising your democratic rights, when so many apathetic losers stick their heads in the ground.

loco rojo, you talk as if it's a new thing but thom has been campaigning for the green lobby for years. people get the impression scientists are split on the issue, but they aren't, there is 99.9% agreement that humans are the cause of global warming. just because some oil company funds a scientist to do some research that will discover a certain piece of information, that is spun and publicised in a way to make it look like there is many scientists believe global warming is natural, doesn't make it so. me turning off a light won't make a difference, we need drastic government legislation, so well done thom. and why bother waste your time and effort just to put him down for trying to do some good? you miserable person
