Tinie Tempah to launch clothing line

The rapper has tried to make his label a 'standalone brand', not a 'hip-hop cliche'

Tinie Tempah is set to launch his own clothing line.

The rapper however has said he wants to steer clear of "hip-hop cliche". Speaking to Q magazine, the Mercury Music Prize nominated artist said:

I really want to stay away from that whole hip-hop cliché - 'He's a rapper turned fashion designer, turned actor turned property developer.'

He added: "I want people to walk into a shop and not immediately think, 'Tinie Tempah', but think, 'That's a nice shirt' or 'That's a nice tee.'… Basically I've tried to make it into a standalone brand, like Folk, Joe Casely-Hayford or House Of Billiam. There's a lot of creative designers in the UK — we should support more."

Tinie Tempah also spoke about how he is going to the gym and boxing so he can take his shirt off while he is performing onstage. "There were occasions during the festivals last year when I wanted to take off my shirt, but the time wasn't right,” he said. "I've been going to the gym and learning to box. By summer I want to be in tip-top shape."

Tinie Tempah has been added to the bill for BBC Radio One's Hackney Weekend alongside Florence And The Machine.

The 'Disc-Overy' rapper will join the likes of Leona Lewis and Plan B for the free bash, which will take place this summer from June 23 – 24 at London Hackney Marshes in the run-up to the Olympics.

Tickets for the event, which will have more than double the capacity of the radio station's Big Weekends, will be obtained through a lottery. For more information visit BBC.co.uk/radio1/events/hackneyweekend2012.
