Shakespeare's tragedy has been adapted by Julian Fellowes

True Grit star Hailee Steinfeld is in talks to star in a new production of Romeo And Juliet.

The 14 year-old actor was nominated for an Oscar for her role in the Coen Brothers‘ western from last year.

Now she is in negotiations to take the lead in the latest version of Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy, according to Hollywoodreporter.com.

The film is to be directed by Italian Carlo Carlie, whose previous credits include Flight Of The Innocent. The script has been adapted by Julian Fellowes, who has previously written Gosford Park, as well as last year’s hit TV costume drama Downton Abbey.

The new version of Romeo And Juliet is expected to start shooting in Italy later this spring. If signed, it will be Steinfield‘s first role since True Grit.
