BBC apologises after showing ‘Tweenies’ Jimmy Savile spoof

CBeebies broadcast the repeat featuring a character dressed as the disgraced former presenter

The BBC has apologised to viewers after broadcasting a repeat episode of Tweenies this morning (January 20) which featured a character dressed as Jimmy Savile.

The episode was first broadcast on CBeebies in 2001 and includes one of the characters, named Max, appearing in a blonde wig and Savile-like tracksuit and using the disgraced former Top Of The Pops presenter’s accent and trademark catchphrases, such as “Now then, guys and girls” – you can watch a clip from the episode below.

In a statement, the BBC said: “This morning CBeebies broadcast a repeat of an episode of the Tweenies, originally made in 2001, featuring a character dressed as a DJ impersonating Jimmy Savile. This programme will not be repeated and we are very sorry for any offence caused.”

Viewers took to Twitter to express their surprise at the choice of episode. @theQuietus wrote, “Jesus Christ, Max from Tweenies is dressed as Jimmy Savile. He just called them all guys and gals…” while Ricky Gervais tweeted: “It’s only fair, as Jimmy Savile would often dress up as a Tweenie. Can’t think why.”

Savile, who died in October 2011 aged 84, is said to have sexually abused more than 200 people over a 60-year period.
