BBC denies reports that Matt Smith is quitting ‘Doctor Who’

'He'll be round for a good while yet,' say Beeb of current Time Lord

The BBC have denied reports that actor Matt Smith wants to quit Doctor Who.

Smith, who has played the iconic Time Lord since 2010 and will begin his third series in the Tardis this evening (September 1), recently told Empire magazine that the role was tiring him out. “I couldn’t do this for seven years,” he said. “I’d be run into the ground. I don’t think you can sustain it.”

His comments led the Daily Mirror to plan an image on their front page of Smith underneath the headline “I Quit”, but BBC Head Of Communications Sam Hodges took to Twitter to scotch the reports and posted:

He then went on to add: “He says in an interview that he won’t be the Doctor forever – hardly quitting!” and insisted Smith would “be around for a good while yet”.

Season seven of Doctor Who will air tonight on BBC 1 at 7.20pm. A description of the opening episode, ‘Asylum Of The Daleks’, on the Radio Times website reads: “The Time Lord, Amy and Rory are kidnapped by their oldest foe the Daleks and forced on a seemingly impossible mission – to enter the Asylum, a planetary prison confining the most terrifying and insane of the deadly aliens’ kind. They need an escape route, and fast – but with an army of mad Daleks closing in, and the Ponds’ relationship in meltdown, it is up to the Doctor to save not only their lives but his friends’ marriage.”

Current Doctor Who companions Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill will make their final appearances at some point during season seven, while a new companion, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman, will make her debut in this year’s Christmas special. Earlier this month (August 12), it was revealed that Richard E Grant will also appear in the Christmas special.
