Bomb threat targets ‘Making a Murderer’ sheriff’s office in Wisconsin

The Manitowoc Police Department reported the caller mentioned "getting justice for Steven."

The county sheriff’s office in Wisconsin received a bomb threat yesterday (February 3) with reports suggesting the move was described by the perpatrator as “getting justice” for Making A Murderer‘s Steven Avery.

Avery is the focus of Making A Murderer, the Netflix documentary which tells the story of his conviction for the murder of Teresa Halbach in 2005. Both and nephew Brendan Dassey are serving life sentences for the murder, having been convicted in 2007. Making A Murderer pays particular attention to perceived injustices in the case.

An anonymous person called in the bomb threat on Wednesday with The Manitowoc Police Department releasing a statement in which they state that a male caller warned of bombs inside the Manitowoc County sheriff’s office building and a vehicle in the parking lot “packed with explosives.”

The reference to Avery came when the caller mentioned “getting justice for Steven.” Police in Manitowoc are confident this was in relation to the man at the centre of Making A Murderer. A second “very similar” threat was received shortly afterwards.

Officials within the department deemed the sheriff’s office safe following a search, with the local courthouse also checked by authorities. Both searches found No suspicious devices.

Authorities deemed the area around the sheriff’s office all clear around 9 p.m. Wednesday, and the courthouse was checked as a precaution. No suspicious devices were found.

The Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation is now working to determine the identity of the hoax caller.

This is the latest incident in a week of Making A Murderer related news.

Steven Avery’s lawyer has said that she has new evidence she believes will exonerate her client while Making A Murderer lawyer Ken Kratz is writing a book he says will prove Steven Avery’s guilt.
