Channel 4 to replace T4 with a new music show

The channel's youth brand will come to an end in December

Channel 4 is set to drop the T4 brand after 14 years.

The TV channel is looking to replace its teenage programming wing with a Friday night music show, reports Broadcastnow.com.

T4 was launched in 1998, but will come to an end in December of this year. It formerly staged an annual festival, T4 On The Beach, and over the years featured presenters such as Alexa Chung, Nick Grimshaw, Alex Zane, Steve Jones, Vernon Kaye, Simon Amstell and June Sarpong.

The hunt is now on for a Friday night music show to replace the gap in youth programming left by T4. Head of formats Dominic Bird said the channel is currently working on three new music shows, which it will pilot in 2013.

He said: “This is an incredibly exciting opportunity to develop a credible popular music show for Friday nights and the pilots reflect our continued ambition to provide our younger audiences on Channel 4 with a range of entertaining music content.”

From 1982-1987, Channel 4 featured the hugely influential music programme The Tube, which counted Jools Holland and Paula Yates amongst its hosts.

The show featured performances from the likes of Madonna, R.E.M., The Smiths, The Cure, Tom Waits, Thin Lizzy, Iggy Pop, The Gun Club, Dexy’s Midnight Runners, The Cramps and many more. The Jam appeared on the very first episode of the programme.
