‘Community’ revived by Yahoo Screen

US sitcom will return for sixth series after being cancelled by NBC

A sixth season of Community has been picked up by Yahoo.

The US comedy was cancelled by broadcaster NBC earlier this year but will return after Yahoo Screen stepped in to revive it.

Yahoo have committed to a 13-episode run for the sixth season, which is also expected to be its last. Showrunner Dan Harmon said: “I am very pleased that ‘Community’ will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo.

“I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, ‘Big Bang Theory’. Look out, Bang Bus!”

The decision to cancel the show after five seasons was confirmed on May 9 and immediately led to speculation that a subscription-based service could pick up the show. However it was subsequently reported that there was little interest from other broadcasters and that Harmon was keen to move on.

Writing on his blog, Harmon also stated that he was not keen on the show returning with a fear that any campaign by fans could lead to the show being “exploited”.

The cult US comedy revolved around a motley crew of adult students at a community college in the fictional town of Greendale, Colorado and starred Donald Glover, Joel McHale and Alison Brie among others. The show’s UK home is on the Sony Entertainment Television channel.
