'Ultimate DJ' idea was scrapped two years ago
Fatboy Slim has said that Simon Cowell’s plans for an ‘X Factor for DJs’ failed because figures within the dance music industry told him to “fuck off”.
The show was due to be titled Ultimate DJ and have a similar format to The X Factor, with DJs battling it out to secure fame and fortune. Speaking about the show, Cowell said that he wanted to jump on the electronic dance music explosion in the US, describing DJs as “the new rock stars”.
Cowell was due to work on the show via his own company SyCo and production group Overbrook, which is owned by actor Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith. However, the idea was canned in 2012.
Speaking to Digital Spy about the idea, Fatboy Slim (aka Norman Cook) said: “Simon Cowell was talking about doing a show and everyone in the business, he kind of started approaching us, and we were like, ‘Fuck off, no – that’s a terrible idea!'”
“That’s the good thing about dance music; it grows organically through drunk people late at night coming up with stupid ideas. It’s not something that can be scripted or transported into a TV studio.”
Simon Cowell is due to return as a judge on the regular X Factor later this year, alongside Cheryl Cole and former Spice Girl, Mel B.
