Fiancé of ‘Downton Abbey’ actress Michelle Dockery dies, aged 34

John Dineen, director of a PR firm, passed away on Sunday after a battle with cancer

Downton Abbey actress Michelle Dockery has confirmed that her fiancé has passed away.

John Dineen, director of a PR firm, died on Sunday (December 13) at a hospice in County Cork, Ireland after a battle with cancer. He was 34 years old.

Dockery, Lady Mary in the award-winning ITV period drama, rarely spoke about her relationship in interviews but revealed last year that her Downton Abbey co-star Allen Leech had introduced her to a “wonderful man from Ireland”. It is believed that she and Dineen got engaged earlier this year.

A spokesperson for the actress told ITN News: “The family is very grateful for the support and kindness they have received but would kindly request that they are left to grieve in private.” Dineen’s funeral will take place in County Cork tomorrow (December 16).

Dockery had been due to perform in a London stage revival of Les Liaisons Dangereuses this autumn, but withdrew from the production in October with no further explanation. She will make her final appearance as Lady Mary in Downton Abbey – The Finale, which airs on Christmas Day on ITV.
