‘Game Of Thrones’ named HBO’s most popular series of all time

Fantasy drama passes 'The Wire' and 'The Sopranos' on list of US network's most watched

Game of Thrones has been named the most popular show in HBO history, passing The Sopranos among others.

The current fourth series of the fantasy drama has been confirmed as having an average audience of 18.4m viewers, more than any other show in the history of the cable network.

The huge viewing figures mean that Game of Thrones is more popular than The Sopranos, The Wire, Six Feet Under, Boardwalk Empire, True Blood, Sex and The City, True Detective and Curb Your Enthusiasm. The show has added an additional 3 million viewers since its third series aired in 2013.

HBO’s previous highest audience came in 2002 when The Sopranos season finale climaxed with 18.2 million viewers.

Earlier this week Game Of Thrones writer George RR Martin suggested that the hit US show may require more than its allotted seven seasons, and even a movie, to tell his full story.
