ITV apologises for distress caused by ‘sick’ Cilla Black joke on ‘You’ve Been Framed’

'You've Been Framed' repeat featured a joke about the late presenter banging her head

ITV has apologised for re-airing an episode of You’ve Been Framed featuring an insensitive joke about the late Cilla Black.

A You’ve Been Framed repeat broadcast on Sunday night included a joke about the late singer and presenter – once ITV’s highest-paid performer – injuring her head in a swimming pool. As a clip of a red-haired woman hitting her head was shown as part of a video montage, host Harry Hill quipped: “And here’s Cilla Black’s last show for ITV. Cilla’s super splash down.”

After viewers complained that the joke was “sick” and “in poor taste”, ITV issued a statement earlier today saying: “This episode of You’ve Been Framed was first broadcast in October 2014 and was repeated again on Sunday night. We have production processes in place to re-edit programmes in circumstances such as this, but regrettably the clip was not cut on this occasion.”

“We are very sorry for this unfortunate oversight and for any distress its inclusion caused,” the statement added.

Cilla Black passed away on August 1 from a subarachnoid haemorrhage sustained when she fell backwards and hit her head at her villa in Estepona, Spain. The day after her funeral, her compilation album The Very Best Of Cilla Black went to Number One on the UK’s Official Albums Chart.
