Jenna Coleman won’t confirm or deny rumours she’s leaving ‘Doctor Who’

Actress who plays Clara Oswald teases a 'surprise' as the series develops

Jenna Coleman has refused to confirm or deny if she is leaving Doctor Who when the current season ends.

The actress, who plays the Time Lord’s sidekick Clara Oswald, has said viewers are in for a “surprise” as the series develops.

In an interview published in this week’s Radio Times Coleman explained her decision to keep her career plans secret: “If you know I’m in the next series – or if you know I’m off – you’ll know how the story ends.”

She added: “Because there’s a surprise we’ve got coming, it’s much better that nobody knows which way it’s going to go – so that’s where we’re trying to keep it at the moment.”

Speaking as a guest on The One Show last month, her co-star Peter Capaldi said: “I’ve read that she may be leaving at Christmas but I don’t even know if she’ll get to Christmas… You’ve got to just watch and wait and see.”

As reported, a scene of a beheading in last Saturday’s episode of Doctor Who was edited out following the murder of journalists in the Middle East by Islamic State (Isis) militants. The BBC revealed the changes were made “out of respect” for Stephen Sotloff and James Foley.

Peter Capaldi’s debut as the Time Lord was watched by almost seven million viewers. He became the 12th Doctor after taking over from Matt Smith.
