Jeremy Paxman to leave ‘Newsnight’ after 25 years

BBC confirm host will leave news show in June

Jeremy Paxman has announced his decision to quit Newsnight after 25 years as host.

The BBC confirmed that Paxman will depart in June of this year having originally decided to quit in June 2013. He was convinced to stay and help a new editorial team settle in what is being described as a “difficult period” following the revelations surrounding Jimmy Savile’s time at the corporation and subsequent Yewtree investigation.

BBC director general Tony Hall led the tributes to Paxman, who was famed for his dogged and aggressive interview technique: “This is a particularly poignant moment for me, because I have known Jeremy and relished working with him since the day I joined the BBC in 1973,” he said.

“And I am therefore better placed than most to know what a remarkable job he has done at Newsnight.”

Meanwhile, current Newsnight editor Ian Katz added: “It’s been a huge privilege to work with Jeremy for the last eight months. I’m deeply grateful to him for delaying his departure to help renew the programme, and for the extraordinary support and generosity he has shown.”

Paxman will continue to host University Challenge following his departure from Newsnight.
