Mary J Blige to star in My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way’s new Netflix series ‘The Umbrella Academy’

She will play a "ruthless and unorthodox hitwoman who travels through time"

Mary J Blige has joined the cast of The Umbrella Academy, an upcoming Netflix show from My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way.

The Umbrella Academy is based on Way’s comic book series of the same name. The 10-episode series is set to launch on the streaming service at some point in 2018.

It had previously been confirmed that the likes of Ellen Page, Misfits star Robert Sheehan and Game Of Thrones actor Tom Hopper would star alongside Emmy Raver-Lampman, David Castaneda, and Aidan Gallagher.

Now, Blige has joined the list of names.

Blige will play Cha-Cha, a character that has been described as a “ruthless and unorthodox hitwoman who travels through time to kill assigned targets”.

The Umbrella Academy will follow the “estranged members of a dysfunctional family of superheroes” working together to solve the mysterious death of their father.

Steve Blackman (Fargo,  Altered Carbon) is the showrunner and Way serves as an executive producer.

My Chemical Romance split in 2013, and last year Way spoke about the band’s recent informal public reunion, and revealed that they didn’t discuss the band or the possibility of getting back together – but he didn’t deny that it could happen.

However, after Way previously said that “wouldn’t rule out” the band reforming, Frank Iero later suggested that Way’s comments had been taken out of context.
