Matt Smith says he doesn’t want Peter Capaldi’s ‘Doctor Who’ to have River Song

Actor says he's very 'possessive' of Alex Kingston

Matt Smith has revealed that he asked Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat not to bring back River Song for the new series.

Song, who was played by actress Alex Kingston, was noted for her chemistry with Smith’s Time Lord and, according to DoctorWhoTV, Smith quipped that he didn’t want to share her with new Doctor Peter Capaldi as he was “really possessive” of the character.

Smith said: “I said this to Steven, I was like, ‘Listen, just don’t. Just not Alex. Anyone else, but don’t give him River’ – but Peter is the Doctor now so, hey, what can I do?”

He added: “I think that Steven will be planning things that are going to unfold over years,” he said. “I think he’ll reinvent the folklore, and it will become Peter’s folklore. But I am really proud of the fact that Alex was part of Number Eleven’s life. My wife!”

Capaldi, who is best-known for playing the ferocious and foul-mouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in political comedy The Thick Of It, is set to star in his first series of Doctor Who this year. Speaking previously about Capaldi’s casting, Jenna Coleman – who plays the Doctor’s companion Clara – said: “He’s going to be so different to Matt [Smith]. It will be a different show next year.”
