‘Modern Family’ could get spin-off series

US sitcom recently collected its fourth consecutive Emmy award for 'Outstanding Comedy Series'

Award-winning US sitcom Modern Family could be getting a spin-off series.

According to Deadline, the show’s US network ABC and production company 20th Century Fox TV have held meetings to discuss possible concepts for a spin-off. The discussions are said to be “in very early stages” and several potential premises are being mooted.

One idea is said to focus on Gil Thorpe, the character played by Rob Riggle in two episodes of Modern Family‘s fourth season. Thorpe is the more successful real estate-selling rival of Modern Family‘s patriarch Phil Dunphy, played by Ty Burrell.

Meanwhile, season five of Modern Family began on ABC last Wednesday (September 25) and is expected to kick off on Sky1 in the UK next month (October). The show follows the trials and tribulations of the various members of the Pritchett-Dunphy clan and stars Burrell, Ed O’Neill, Julie Bowen, Sofia Vergara, Jesse Tyler-Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet.

Since launching in 2010, Modern Family has been a hit with viewers and TV critics alike and earlier this month (September) it won its fourth consecutive Emmy award for ‘Outstanding Comedy Series’.
