US network Fox cuts short production on ‘Gavin & Stacey’ remake

Fox originally ordered 13 episodes of the remake, but now wants just 6

US network Fox has cut short production on its remake of Gavin & Stacey.

Fox originally ordered 13 episodes of the remake, retitled Us And Them for American audiences, but the network has now decided it only wants the six episodes that have already been filmed.

The series has not technically been cancelled yet, Deadline reports, but the cast members have been told they are free to take new jobs. Fox is said to have been concerned that the “tone” of the series does not compliment the edgier feel of its other new sitcoms. The network is still pledging to air the completed episodes early next year (2014).

Gavin & Stacey‘s creators James Corden and Ruth Jones have served as executive producers on the US remake – as has Steve Coogan, whose production company Baby Cow made the original BBC series. Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls) and Jason Ritter (Parenthood) star in the roles made famous by Joanna Page and Mat Horne. Most of the character names are the same, though Uncle Bryn becomes Uncle Brian and Smithy is now called Archie.

Meanwhile, the action has been relocated from Billericay and Barry Island to New York and smalltown Pennsylvania. Watch a trailer for the remake below.
