The release date was originally announced in a 30-second teaser trailer on YouTube, which saw Moura walk to camera as Escobar’s date of birth and the date he was shot dead by Colombian police flash on screen. It ended with the September 2 date appearing on screen.

Narcos is directed by Jose Padilha, who previously directed Moura in the successful Brazilian films Elite Squad and its sequel, before helming the 2014 reboot of RoboCop starring Michael Keaton, Samuel L Jackson and Gary Oldman.

Narcos was created by Law & Order: Criminal Intent showrunner Chris Brancato with writing Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard, who previously wrote Prince Of Persia: Sands Of Time and Nicolas Cage film The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

The fact the Narcos season 2 trailer shows the date of Escobar’s death has led to speculation that the second season will be the last and portray the drug baron’s shooting.
