Two Door Cinema Club on 'Beacon' artwork: 'It's sexy not sexist'
Singer Alex Trimble says sleeve was a tribute to French photographer Guy Bourdin
The Northern Irish trio responded to negative criticism to the sleeve, which depicts a near-naked female dangling from a chandelier, and saw them branded sexist. The image, the band say, is a tribute to French photographer Guy Bourdin.
Singer Alex Trimble told the Daily Star: "Guy's photographs were an inspiration to us when making the album, and it never occurred to us that our tribute would cause any offence. The sleeve is meant to be sexy not sexist...When I look at it now, I can understand where people are coming from being upset. But I still think it's a great piece of art."
meanwhile, Two Door Cinema Club are among the first acts to be announced for this year's BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend. The annual free music event is set to be held in Londonderry, Northern Ireland over the weekend of May 24-26. Olly Murs has also been announced to perform. Headline artists and a full line-up will be confirmed in the coming months.
The event was last held in Londonderry back in 2004. It will visit the city again this year as it celebrates its status as UK City Of Culture for 2013. Last year, it was staged at London's Hackney Marshes to mark the opening of the Olympic Park. Jay-Z headlined the event, which also included performances from Jack White, Lana Del Rey, Bombay Bicycle Club and Florence + The Machine. Ticket details will be announced in the coming months.
