Tyler, The Creator cancels Australian tour following protests from feminist group

Odd Future rapper has been accused of homophobia and sexism in the past

Odd Future rapper Tyler, The Creator has cancelled his Australian tour amid protests and complaints about the content of his lyrics.

The hip-hop star had been scheduled to play dates in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney during September.

However, Tyler has now scrapped the shows following a campaign by feminist group Collective Shout urging the Australian government not to grant the artist a working visa. The rapper has been accused of homophobia and sexism in the past.

A statement on the Facebook page of promotion company Frontier Touring quotes Tyler as saying: “We would much rather come to Australia when it isn’t surrounded in controversy. I love my fans there and hopefully I’ll be back soon. Don’t do drugs.”

Frontier Touring also apologised to “those affected by this cancellation”, offering a refund to ticket holders.

Tyler, The Creator previously claimed that he was no longer allowed entry to Australia, tagging Coralie Alison, the director of operations at Collective Shout, into a tweet. Alison has since received death and rape threats from fans of the artist angry at what he claimed had happened.

Tyler was involved in a dispute with the group in 2013 who tried to get him banned from the country on account of what they deemed to be inappropriate content in his lyrics.

The rapper made it into the country and promptly called a member of the group a “fucking bitch”, a “fucking whore”, and a “fucking cunt” while onstage in Sydney.

Over the weekend, Tyler, The Creator publicly spoke of his desire to work with former One Direction member Zayn Malik. Tyler pitched the idea of a collaboration over Twitter, writing: “Hi @zaynmalik, I have beautiful instrumentals and you have a voice lets figure this out my guy. Epic album cuts tho no radio singles”.

Meanwhile, Tyler recently cast doubt on the long term future of Odd Future when he claimed the group was “no more”. Group member Earl Sweatshirt later added to the speculation by claiming Tyler was merely “solidifying the obvious.”

Tyler, The Creator’s latest album ‘Cherry Bomb’ was released in April 2015.
