U2 pay tribute to Rosa Parks

The band dedicate songs to the US civil rights icon

U2 paid tribute to American civil rights icon Rosa Parks during their show in Detroit earlier this week.

Before ‘One’ was played singer Bono said of Parks that “because of her quiet dignity and strength, America became a better, changed country. This song is dedicated to the mother of American civil rights movement Rosa Parks God Bless you in your rest”.

Then as the band launched into ‘Where The Streets Have No Name’ he said: “From Rosa Parks in America to Nelson Mandela in Africa.”

U2, who played two nights at Palace Of Auburn Hills , also dedicated their 1984 Top Ten hit ‘Pride(In The Name Of Love)’ to Parks, who made history in 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama when she refused to give up her seat on a public bus to a white man as was the law at the time.

She became one of the icons of the American civil rights movement starting a boycott of all public transport in the town. She died earlier this week (October 24) aged 92.
