Well, anything REM can do...

U2 were joined onstage by punk icon Patti Smith during their show in New York earlier this week (November 21).

The two joined forces for a version of John Lennon’s ‘Instant Karma!’ in the encore at Madison Square Garden.

Smith also appeared onstage with REM earlier this year, performing ‘E-Bow The Letter’ with them in London’s Hyde Park.

U2, whose US tour goes on till December 19, also played a snippet of The Clash’s ‘Rock The Casbah’.

The full U2 set was:

‘City Of Blinding Lights’
‘Vertigo’

‘Love And Peace Or Else’
‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’
‘Bullet The Blue Sky’
‘Miss Sarajevo’
