Music videos get 3-D treatment

The record label that represents artists including U2, Gwen Stefani, Dr. Dre and TV On The Radio, has teamed up with Academy Award-winning director James Cameron to create 3-D presentations of music videos and concert footage.

Interscope Geffen A&M Records decided to launch the project after Stefani's video for 'Wind It Up' was filmed in 3-D last year. That version was never released, but label Chairman Jimmy Iovine was so impressed by it he decided to join forces with Cameron, who developed the Fusion digital stereo camera system (designed to duplicate human vision) to create additional 3-D music presentations.

"When I saw what James Cameron was doing with his dedication and wizardry to the 3-D platform, it seemed like the perfect combination for us to do some groundbreaking work," said Iovine.

The first 3-D concert is expected to be released theatrically within six months, and several musicians are set to design 3-D glasses.

Cameron has directed films including 'Titanic' and 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day'. He is currently using the Fusion equipment on a 3-D science fiction feature film, 'Avatar', due out in 2009.
