The Edge: delaying release will take U2 album 'to next level'

Plus guitarist praises Mercury Prize winners Elbow

U2's The Edge has told NME.COM that his band are still writing songs for their next album.

The band recently decided to push back the release date of the follow-up to 2004's 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb', declaring they wanted "2009 to be our year".

However, while many were anticipating that the record would come out this year, U2's guitarist explained the band were still hard at work on the album.

"We're still writing and we're trying to take it to the next level," said The Edge. "It's taking a while, but I'm told there's no short cut to greatness!"

The U2 man - who spoke to NME.COM after presenting Peter Gabriel with Amnesty International's 2008 Ambassador of Conscience award in London today (September 10) recognising the legend's work in the area of human rights - also added the he was really pleased that Elbow won the 2008 Nationwide Mercury Prize for 'The Seldom Seen Kid'.

"They're a really good band, good for them," he declared, before joking: "More power to your Elbow!"

I refuse to believe that there is anyone out there who genuinely in their heart of hearts can turn around and say U2 are a poor band. Anyone who says it is on a wind-up. Yes we all know Bono is a bell-end. But they are 32 years in the business. Still the original four members. Songs spanning the 32 years like like Bad, With or Without You, Even Better than the Real Thing, Pride, When Love Comes to Town, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Desire, City of Blinding Lights, New Years Day, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Where the Streets Have No Name, Vertigo. Crap band yeah? Ha ha ha ha. Please. End of discussion.

Shame, that the group that wrote 'One,' 'Stay, & ' Ultraviolet,' are now disrespected en masse by the "musical elite." Real music fans still love U2.

You all hate U2? My God, you're all so cool, you ignorant scenester fools. They are a great band who've made 4 brilliant albums, it's typical of the idiots on this page to hear 'Beautiful Day' and think they have an opinion

Well.....I've heard Beautiful Day, along with the entirety of the U2 discography. I consider myself a U2 fan, but I must admit that their last couple of albums have been disappointing. They're getting away with murder, as far as all the hype is concerned. I'd give All That You Can't....a C+ and the last one a C-. I expected a lot more from such a talented band. I feel the same way about R.E.M.'s last several albums. Accelerate is only slightly better. Who else agrees that if a band's creative well has dried up, they should stop?
