The U2 scored Spider-Man musical has been hit by another setback after it emerged lead actress Natalie Mendoza may be set to quit the show.

The star, who plays villainess Arachne, was injured during the first preview show in November and missed two weeks of performances while she recovered from concussion.

It is now thought she has pulled out of the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark altogether, reports The New York Times.

She is one of four actors to have sustained injury during previews of the new play, which is set to officially open on February 7, 2011.

Mendoza's friend Christopher Tierney was hospitalised after falling more than 20 feet earlier this month. She has not appeared in the musical since.

Although Mendoza has yet to confirm her departure, an official statement is expected imminently.

The move comes after the show finally got back on track without any hitches just six days ago.

The production, scored by Bono and The Edge, is estimated to be the most expensive musical in history with a cost of over $65 million (£42 million) to produce the show and over $1million (£650,000) a week in running costs.
