The producers of the long-delayed U2-scored Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark musical have revealed details of the show's new version.

The move comes after it was announced that production on the show would be halted to make way for drastic changes after a series of mishaps had occurred in early performances.

According to producers, new director Phillip William McKinley is putting more focus on the love story between Peter Parker and Mary Jane and the battle with the villain Green Goblin.

The character of villainous spider-woman Arachne, who had a central role in the original production, is to be scaled back significantly too, and a Greek chorus of four singers who narrated the show is to be dropped altogether.

U2 guitarist The Edge was at the Foxwoods Theatre, off Times Square, on Sunday (April 17) to watch the final performance of the original version. Frontman Bono will be joining him later this week to work on new material for the production.

Actor Reeve Carney, who plays the lead role, defended the new show in a video interview. Watch footage of the stars talking about the production below.

"This new version, while there are going to be changes it's still true to the heart of her vision," he told The Daily Telegraph. "It's just having a little bit of extra help, that's all it is."

Production has been halted for the next three weeks while rehearsals begin for the new show, which is now due to officially open to the public on June 14.

The musical has suffered a succession of setbacks since previews began, with injuries to cast members, financial problems and cast changes all contributing to the delay.

Previews of the musical have also received scathing reviews from several prominent critics, who broke embargos and ran reviews of the show last month.
