U2 have paid tribute to former president of South Africa Nelson Mandela on his 93rd birthday.

The Irish stadium rockers, who were performing a gig at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Thursday (July 14), got the crowd to sing a rousing rendition of 'Happy Birthday' to Mandela, who they refer to by his clan nickname Madiba.

You can watch the rendition in a video by scrolling down to the bottom of the page and clicking.

The New York Post also reports that the video was shown during a celebratory lunch for Mandela yesterday (July 18), which was the actual date of his birthday. The lunch was hosted by actor Morgan Freeman, who portayed the former president in the Oscar nominated biopic Invictus.

U2 are currently on the last leg of their 360° world tour, which has passed The Rolling Stones' 2005 - 2007 'A Bigger Bang' tour to become the most successful in history. According to estimates, when the tour finishes in New Brunswick on July 30, it will have grossed more than $700 million (£428 million).
