The original director of the U2-scored musical Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, Julie Taymor, has announced that she is suing the producers of the show.

Taymor, who was sacked from the show in March after it received scathing reviews from critics, is seeking $1 million (£621,000) in damages, claiming that her creative rights have been violated and that she hasn't been paid appropriately for her work, reports BBC News.

The show, which is widely reported to be the most expensive musical in history, suffered a series of early setbacks, which included injuries to cast members and financial problems and was forced to close for three weeks earlier this summer.

During the closure, new director Philip William McKinley took over from Taymor and revamped the show, allowing it to re-open in June this year.

Taymor is also seeking half of all profits from the original Spider-Man show and a permanent ban of the use of her name or likeness in connection with a filmed documentary made about the troubled early days of the musical.

The show's producers have issued a statement about the suit in which they say that "the production has indeed compensated Ms Taymor for her contribution as a co-book writer" and that they hope "the court system will provide, once and for all, an opportunity to resolve this dispute".
