U2 have been announced as the first guests to perform on presenter Jimmy Fallon's first episode of The Tonight Show.

The band are rumoured to be unveiling new material and will be performing on the show - which is currently fronted by Jay Leno - on February 17. Show booker Jonathan Cohen confirmed the appearance of the band via his Twitter account last night (January 19). He wrote:

According to Variety, Will Smith will also join Fallon on the late night US programme.

U2 recently received an Oscar nomination for their song 'Ordinary Love' from the film Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, just days after winning Best Original Song at the Golden Globes.

The band recently played their first live show in three years at a Haiti benefit concert in Beverly Hills. You can watch footage of that concert below. Reports recently claimed that U2 would release their new album in April and an announcement could be made at Super Bowl XLVIII in February.

Meanwhile, ex-manager Paul McGuinness has spoken further about his decision to retire from managing U2. He stepped down from his role after 34 years in November of last year. He told Billboard: "I'm 62, and I did not feel like doing the next tour. As you have observed, I've been to pretty well every show U2 have ever performed, and I just did not want to continue doing that into my 60s."
