Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig has published a bizarre review of Drake‘s new album ‘Nothing Was The Same’.
Koenig was reviewing the LP for the website The Talkhouse, which encourages artists to give their opinions on other releases from their peers. Rather than pen a traditional review, however, Koenig’s appraisal of the Canadian rapper’s new record quickly develops into a strange – and, as Pitchfork notes, possibly fictional – anecdote about the time Vampire Weekend opened for an unnamed Danish band who were fronted by a singer named Hans.
“I gotta be honest – I didn’t listen to the whole thing,” wrote Koenig. “Obviously, it’s good. You think a Canadian child actor would be this successful as a rapper if he wasn’t good?” After awarding the album “10 outta 10” he then claimed that the track ‘Worst Behaviour’ had struck a chord with him, stating: “There are SO many motherfuckers out there. I’ve been making music since I was seven years old (started with piano) so I’ve been betrayed more times than I can count.
“You know how many people talk shit behind your back and then try to be your best friend over the course of 22 years in the industry?? Drake only got into music like five years ago, so if you see how angry he is — IMAGINE HOW I FEEL.”
The review continues with Koenig’s recollection of being spurned by the Danish band when they played a show in New York, and concludes with the sentence: “FUCK HANS… TO SEE A COMPLETE LIST OF ALL THE MOTHERFUCKERS WHO NEVER LOVED US, CHECK OUT: http://www.myspace.com/vampireweekend/motherfuckers.” You can read his review in full by clicking here.
‘Nothing Was The Same’ is Drake’s third album and was released last month. Although the album was pipped to the Number One slot on the UK Official Albums Charts by Kings Of Leon, Drake’s first week sales tally of 61,000 made the LP the fastest selling hip-hop album of 2013, beating the opening sales of Kanye West’s ‘Yeezus’ (which sold 25,000 week one) and Jay Z’s ‘Magna Carta Holy Grail’ (39,000).
