Watchdog looking into 'X Factor' vote

Viewers complain they couldn’t vote for favourite in TV contest

The vote for the grand final of 'X Factor' this weekend (December 15) is being investigated after fans have complained they could not vote for their preferred choice.

Favourite Rhydian Roberts was pipped to the 2007 title by Leon Jackson, however television watchdog Ofcom has said it has been contacted by 80 viewers questioning the vote, and BBC News reports that some fans claim they tried to vote up to ten times but were unsuccessful.

"If you ring ten times you expect to get through - I was very cross," said one viewer, Gwyneth Greenslade from Powys. "A lot of other people in this area said they couldn't get through. It seems to be very unfair."

Radio stations in Wales where Roberts is from are now demanding a recount and say they will boycott Jackson's winning single.

Talkback Thames, the production company behind X Factor, said that some viewers may have got the engaged tone when trying to vote, but this was due to the volume of calls and not part of a conspiracy.

"As all numbers go through to the same lines and vote platform, it is impossible for there to be any bias in favour or against a particular contestant," a spokeswoman told BBC News. "Phone lines were monitored throughout the night and there were no issues on voting lines.

"We do get a huge surge of calls and depending on phone operators some callers may have experienced an engaged tone or network busy message and therefore may have to call back, but these calls should not be charged.”

I think its ridiculous that people are saying that Leon shouldnt have won! I had to ring about 5 or 6 times to get through to vote for Leon so there is no unfairness. Around 9 million people watch X Factor so it is almost impossible to have your call go through straight away!! I believe some people are just upset because they wanted Rhydian to win and he didnt and I think that the radio stations saying they will boycott Leon's single are pathetic. You dont hear people from where Same Difference live saying things like this and demanding a re-count. I think people who wanted Rhydian to win should accept the fact that he didnt. It doesnt matter anyway because Rhydian has a brilliant voice and i think he will definatly get signed by someone. Congratulations Leon, you have a brilliant voice and you'll go far. x

Oh my god. I’ve heard for the zillionth time today that people think that the X Factor was a fix. Can you Rhydian fans please get over yourself and admit defeat?! Yes, Rhydian can sing, there’s no question about it – but Leon had more charisma, he was more likeable and therefore more people warmed to him. Apart from an amazing voice, what else did Rhydian have? He was humble, but he had zero personality and his smugness was utterly annoying.

On top of which, Leon had support from the likes of Michael Buble, Westlife, Cheryl Cole, Claire Sweeny, Ferne Cotton, and so many more. Why is it so hard to believe that Leon won? He appealed to all the demographics (gay, straight, old, young, single mothers, the whole of Scotland) and who did Rhydian appeal to? Certainly not the 16-35 year old female – most of which bothered to pick up the phone.

Rhydian’s problem was that he was a victim of his own success. Lots of people thought he had already won, thus not placing their vote and leaving it to the rest of the public to part with their money. Leon’s fans on the other hand, were not complacent and kept their finger on the redial button when they couldn’t get through the first time. I couldn’t get through

I am finding it really hard to believe that Rhydan fans could not get through for the entire night?? The voting began after their fist round of songs, lets say at 7.45pm and finished shortly before the results were announced – again, lets say at 9.45pm (they actually announced the winner at 10.30pm). You Rhydian fans couldn’t get through for TWO whole hours? Were you actually trying for two hours? I think not.

Leon was the inferior singer, true. But it doesn’t mean he can’t sing, but where he lacked in his vocal, he made up in his personality – something that Rhydian needed lessons in. I still can’t forget how ‘nauseating’ (as Sharon put it) he is.

Leon won. Get over it.
