Woolworths scrap CD singles

UK's biggest retailer of singles gives up on the format

Woolworths has decided not to stock CD singles due to declining sales.

The chain, the UK's biggest retailer of singles, attribute the death of the format to the rise in downloading.

Jim Batchelor, Woolworths' commercial director, said: "Digital downloading is now the true customer choice for listening and purchasing single music tracks.

"CDs are alive and well for album sales, but unfortunately the physical singles market is in terminal decline."

The store will continue to stock high profile singles, however, such as those released by the winners of television talent competitions like 'X Factor'.

The move will take place in August, and Woolworths have expanded their online store as a result.

Oh, well as long as we can still get CD singles like HMV I don't mind. I prefer cd of all kinds over downloads, much better and makes it feel work has been put into making the cd and so on.

Well I suppose for singles it's not so bad but if this was to happen for albums it would really start to suck the life out of music.

I NEVER download albums, I always buy them, but I really don't see the point of spending £3 on a CD with about 2 songs on it when you can just get it on the album or a download. It's sad that they're not being sold anymore, but they were always a waste of money.

It's just a matter of time before HMV start charging delivery for online singles - which will signal the end for the customer as choice is slowly being eliminated.
