Band charging £1,200 for new single

Subliminal Girls' new release will cost a pretty packet

London five-piece Subliminal Girls are set to release a limited-edition version of their new single, 'Self-Obsession Is An Art Form', with each copy priced at £1,200.

Ten copies of the limited-edition vinyl single, released on November 17, will be made. It will come packaged in a box with an art print, a photographic book, a screen-printed T-shirt, an acrylic disk and signed negatives of the band.

Pop artist Stuart Semple, who designed the singles, said the move was a measure designed to "fight iPod culture in which album covers are reduced to thumb-nails," according to a statement.

The singles will be available to buy from the Opus Gallery's website, Opus-art.com.

This work is acerbic, yet intimately personal and slick, it retains a sense of spontaneity. Popular culture is the most efficient language for any meaningful communication, creating proud artistic landscapes by culling from the legends of our past as well as the flotsam and jetsam of our collective pop cultural seas.Either that or overpriced pretentious bollocks.

'...a measure designed to "fight iPod culture in which album covers are reduced to thumb-nails," . What the fuck? Since when has this even been an issue? And even if it was, do these fuckwits think that releasing a £1200 single is the way to combat it? I've never even heard of Subliminal Girls, but I hate them already.

According to their MySpace page, they are "taking no more shit". So, just creating it, repackaging it and selling it at inflated prices then?

This is pretty high up on my Christmas present list to Santa, sandwiched between Gonorrhea and a phone call from Johnathan Ross and Russell Brand.

Is this some sort of PR stunt to get people going onto their myspace? If not then please pull head out of arse. It's not as if anyone has the money to buy records anymore, let alone all this crap with it

What a bunch of idiots. Rubbish band try and get some PR shocker. Their last single - a Duran Duran cover - done 'straight' no less was absoutely awful. They are all in their late thirties too, and try and look like little Hoxton kids.

i love the subliminal girls, they are one of the last truly punk rock bands....do you really think they are trying to win a popularity vote with this stunt or simply piss off people that take themselves far too seriously?

I too love Subliminal Girls. I won't be buying the single, but then isn't that the point? It's getting them talked about. It's refreshing to see an actual indie band sticking to their indie ways. Anyway, despite all of this, Self Obsession is a fantastic song.

Doing it for the PR? So what. Surely that is what being an artist is all about - expressing your view on the world to others be that through art or music. For some folk to have sat down together and had the vision to do both should be truely inspiring to us all. The likes of B. Timpkins Esq. above (and most of the morons that populate this country) will probably never understand this concept. As the 'Girls say themselves; self obsession is an art form...best of luck to them, about time young independent and talented artists were recognised for their worth especially at this time. I'd rather give my money to them than a bunch of thieving bankers...nuff said

Self Obsession is an ace song. Good luck to them, they knew there would be a backlash about doing something like this. It's a novel marketing idea, but it's clearly working if it's gotten people talking. Kudos to the Sub Girls! I hope all 10 sell.
