London Metro club to shut due to Crossrail

Venue to shut its doors for last time in January

The London Metro venue, located on Oxford Street, is set to close down in January.

The venue, which has hosted acts such as Klaxons, J Mascis and Courtney Love in the past, is, like it's near-neighbour the Astoria, being forced to close because of the terms of the Crossrail Act.

The act has been enforced to make way for a new train line to run through central London, meaning the adjacent Tottenham Court Road underground station, which will be a stop, will have to be expanded.

The last club night set to be held at the Metro will be Blow Up on January 17.

Blow Up organiser Paul Tunkin was scathing about the decision.

"Although the rumblings of Crossrail have been going on for many years it has come up far quicker than any of us could have expected," he said in a statement.

He added, "At present we are looking for new premises to relocate the venue to but have yet to find one suitable. Ultimately it is another nail in the coffin for central London's live music and club scene."
