Zavvi closes 22 shops with immediate effect

Hundreds of jobs are lost in the high street cull

Music chain Zavvi has closed 22 of its stores with immediate effect, administrates Ernst And Young confirmed today (January 8).

The retailer was forced into administration in December after being heavily affected by the closure of Woolworths, which also owned Zavvi's main supplier, Entertainment UK.

The closures have resulted in 178 job losses. Among the stores to close is Liverpool's Clayton branch, which has cut 28 jobs alone.

Zavvi's remaining 92 stores will remain open, and a sale offering up to 50 per cent off stock is due to start on Friday (January 9).

Tom Jack of Ernst And Young told the BBC that the continuing crisis affecting the UK high street had left the administrators with no option but to close stores immediately.

"Despite record consumer demand since Christmas, it is no longer possible to support continue trading across all of the Zavvi stores.

"Unfortunately, the current difficulties faced on the UK high street seem to be discouraging retailers from investing in a significant number of new stores."

Jack added that despite there being 60 parties interested in owning all or part of Zavvi, the retailer was yet to complete any deal.

Zavvi is one of only two major UK high street entertainment retailers, the other being HMV.

The following Zavvi stores have closed (number of staff job losses are in brackets):

Ashford (Designer Outlet) (8 staff)
Ayr (5)
Bideford (Atlantic Village) (7)

I have worked for virgin megastores/zavvi for the last 5 years of my life and may I just add they have been awesome. I'm afraid that if we do go under the consumer will only be left with the 'dog' and the dog will be able to higher their prices due to no direct highstreet competition. I guess CDs and DVDs will become a dying technology within our life times and there will be no need for record shops, as the consumer you guys need to invest in these shops that are all struggling and stop dpwnloading

I have worked for virgin megastores/ zavvi for the past 5 years and they have been awesome- I love my job. However with the economy as it is it is vital for you consumers to go out there and buy CDs and DVDs rather than downloading because downloading will only aid in the death of the cd. I fear for the wallets of the consumers if worst comes to worst and zavvi disappears, as you will only be left with the 'dog' and with no direct highstreet competition they will be able to rise their prices even more. Well to our loyal customers, our regulars, the people who appreciated our service and chose us over the dog, I hope to see you soon.Thank you n good night x

In response to paranoid_android, You're living in la-la land if you think indie stores are going to make a re-apearance mate! As for Zavvi! a victim of souless fools who prefer to browse music with beans at the local supermarket :( very uncool! Jeff buckley's Grace in one hand and a loaf of bread in the other...I think not!Unfortunatley it is a sign of the times! retail capatalists who have taken all the fun out of roaming around your local record store! Never mind paranoid_android HMV will be left to charge stupid prices (like they dont already do) and you can support them until Tesco's do them in as well!
