Jermaine Dupri leaves Island Records mid-contract
Janet Jackson's boyfriend departs label after less than two years
Jermaine Dupri is no longer president of Island Records Urban Music division, and reportedly departed the position without completing his contract.
Dupri, who is dating Janet Jackson, was employed at the label for less than two years, with no reason given thus far for his departure.
It is not known if he was let go or if he quit, but Dupri oversaw releases from several low-selling records, including his girlfriend’s album ‘Discipline’, which sold less than half a million copies.
He was hired in February 2007 to oversee Tag Records, a label that was a partnership between Island Def Jam and Procter & Gamble's Tag brand, reports Variety.
Despite the fact that the intention was to feature Dupri on records from up and coming acts, only one single came out, which was ‘On a Mission’ by Q Da Kid. It sold just 3,000 downloads.
