The trial of three men accused of murdering South African reggae star Lucky Dube, who was shot to death in Johannesburg on October 2007, has begun at the high court in the city the incident took place.

Julius Xowa, Sfiso Mhlanga and Thabiso Maroping deny the charge and those of unlawful possession of firearms and attempted hijacking, reports BBC News.

They were denied bail last November.

The reggae artist was shot in front of his son in Rosettenville, a suburb of the South African city. The incident led many South Africans to make calls for the death penalty to be re-introduced.
