Mary Travers of Peter, Paul and Mary dies
Mary Travers of folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary has died aged 72.

The Kentucky-born singer, who achieved success with the band in the 1960s, passed away yesterday (September 16) of the side effects of treatment from leukemia, reports CNN.

Peter, Paul and Mary formed in 1961 in New York, releasing their debut, self-titled album the following year, which proved to be hugely successful in the USA.

They went on to release further records, including their 1969 Number One hit 'Leaving On A Jet Plane', and cover artists including Bob Dylan before disbanding in 1970. They each pursued solo careers but reunited in 1978 and continued to play live since.

Travers was diagnosed with her illness in 2004, leading to postponements of some live bookings, although they continued to perform following the diagnoses.
