2010 World Cup South Africa to kick off with stadium concert

'Major' artists being lined up for event

The 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa is set to kick off with a concert in Johannesburg's Orlando Stadium featuring "major" international and African acts.

The event will take place on June 10, last for three hours and be broadcast all over the world. The line-up is set to be announced in January, reports BBC News.

Kevin Wall, who produced the Live8 and Live Earth events, is in charge of the show, and has said that much of the bill will be given over to African artists, so spaces for acts from outside the continent would be limited.

"We are going to have a lot of the major African artists and really it's going to be about Africa so the slots for international artists are a rarity," he explained.

It had been rumoured that the show will feature a reunited Spice Girls, but Wall refused to comment on specifics of the bill.

"I've heard a lot of these rumours," he admitted. "We've been overwhelmed by ideas like that, that have come to us from artists and the press."

Money raised will go to the 20 Centres For 2010 charity, which is aiming to build centres for health, education and football in the continent.
