Record Store Day 2010 a 'total success' say UK record shops
Organisers have hailed the 2010 Record Store Day as a success as sales soared at independent record shops around the UK.

The annual day, held this year on Saturday (April 17), sees a number of acts releasing exclusive records to encourage music fans to make the most of their local shop. This year's releases, the most so far, included contributions from The Beatles, The Flaming Lips, Metallica and the first release since 2003 featuring all four members of Blur.

Spencer Hickman, manager of Rough Trade East in London who helped co-ordinate the day and the releases, said shops across Britain have been reporting that April 17 was a big success for them.

"It was a total success," he told NME.COM. "Some of the stores are already telling me that they doubled last year's total. Some stores say it has been there best ever day of trading too."

Hickman added his shop was well supported by the public throughout the day.

"There were queues round the block before we opened," he said. "There was a fantastic atmosphere and it was just generally pretty crazy - it went so well."

According to early figures, singles sales were up 466 per cent week-on-week and 96 per cent up on last year's Record Store Day, while albums were up 8.9 per cent week-on-week, and up 11 per cent on last year's event.
