The future of Skins has been thrown into doubt following the departure of co-creator Jamie Brittain.

Brittain founded the teen drama along with his father Bryan Elsley, and it became an instant hit.

But yesterday (April 5) it was announced that he was departing the show after five series, reports AOL.

He insisted that he had left to allow new blood to come through, saying: "I've just said everything I want to say. It's time for new writers to come forward and portray the truth about teenagers."

The news will be a further blow to the series, which this year saw its ratings fall by half. The fifth series, which featured Skins' third generation of teenagers, ended recently on E4 with just 600,000 viewers. This figure was down from an average of 1.1 million for series four.

A sixth series has, however, already been commissioned. Brittain wrote on his Twitter page: "Thanks for all the lovely messages. It's true, I am leaving Skins. Sad to go, but don't worry, it's in very good hands."
