A new stage musical about the life of Susan Boyle is due to hit the stage next year.

Actress Elaine C Smith (pictured below) - known for her role as Mary in Scottish sitcom Rab C Nesbitt - will take the lead role in the production, reports AFP.

The show will detail Boyle's rise to fame since finishing second on Britain's Got Talent in 2009.

Due to open at Newcastle's Royal Theatre in March 2012, the tour is due to last at least six month. Producers have lined up 26 dates across the UK, US and Australia so far.

"I never thought my life story would end up on the stage but a lot has happened in two years and it is a very exciting prospect," Boyle commented.

"I hope everyone enjoys the show and I promise there will be a few surprises along the way."

Producer Michael Harrison described the 50-year-old as an "inspiring woman".

Boyle scored the fastest selling debut album in UK chart history with 'I Dreamed A Dream' in 2009 and also topped the US album chart twice.

However, she has also been treated for exhaustion at London clinic The Priory and was left feeling "very distressed" when she disturbed an intruder at her West Lothian home last year.
