Argentine folk singer Facundo Cabral has been shot dead in Guatemala. He was 74.

According to Guatemalan president Alvaro Colom, Cabral was not targeted by the gunman but was caught in fire intended for a music promoter he was travelling with.

The pair were reportedly ambushed while travelling from a hotel to Guatemala City, reports BBC News.

Colom decreed three days of mourning and said he was "dismayed by this cowardly act".

Cabral was an icon of the Latin American music scene and became famous as a protest singer in Argentina in the early 1970s.

His most famous song was'No Soy de Aqui ni Alla' - which translates as 'I'm Not From Here Or There' - which you can watch a clip of by scrolling down and clicking below.

Speaking to Associated Press in 2008, Cabral said: "I love life so much because it cost me so much to enjoy it. From the cradle to the grave is a school, so if what we call problems are lessons, we see life differently."
