Floating island sculpture goes missing at Secret Garden Party
The £12,000 piece was supposed to head to Burning Man later this month
Is Land, a £12,000 artwork – made by Royal College of Art graduates Sarah Cockings and Laurence Symonds – was made specifically for the art and music festival. Witnesses spotted two people in a dingy rowing out to the helium-inflated sculpture, which was suspended above a lake, and cutting the five ropes holding it in place at 3am on the Sunday of the festival.
The installation artwork then floated off and hasn’t been spotted since. The UK Civil Aviation Authority as well as local airports were informed that the nine metre sculpture had drifted off, but it has yet to be found.
The artists are now trying to track down Is Land – which they believe could have drifted out of mainland UK - in order to fulfill their original plans and take it to the Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert later this month. Failing that, they plan to create a new version of the piece, using public donations.
