Barack Obama paid tribute to rapper Heavy D at his funeral yesterday (November 18).

The US President sent a letter to hip hop star's 11-year-old daughter which was read out at the service in his home town of Mount Vernon, New York, reports Billboard.

Other notable guests at the funeral for Heavy D, whose real name was Dwight Arrington Myers, included P Diddy, Usher and John Legend.

The note from Obama, which was sent to the rapper's daughter Xea Myers, was read out by Reverend Al Sharpton and hailed Myers for his artistic achievements.

It said:

We extend our heartfelt condolences at this difficult time. He will be remembered for his infectious optimism and many contributions to American music. Please know that you and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

P Diddy, real name Sean Combs, is also thought to have paid tribute to his friend with a speech at the service.

Heavy D was pronounced dead earlier this month (November 8) after being found unconscious at his Los Angeles home. The official cause of his death is still unknown, according to authorities.

Myers rose to prominence as the leader of hip-hop group Heavy D & The Boyz, with whom he released five studio albums. The first of these came in 1987 with 'Living Large', followed by 'Big Tyme' in 1989, 'Peaceful Journey' in 1991, 'Blue Funk' in 1993 and 'Nuttin But Love' in 1994.

He then went solo in 1997 and released four further albums. These started with 'Waterbred Hev' in 1997, then 'Heavy' in 1999, 'Vibes' in 2008 and lastly 'Love Opus', which was released in September this year.
